Starting as people with an idea to serve the people Indiana Community Radio started it’s first station “WJCF” in 2000. Countless years were spent trying to get a station before the first station went on.

Money flowed to attorneys and engineers like a vast Ohio River of green….

The first station on air was tough, and continues to be.  Meeting monthly bills is always a challenge. Some stations seem to have the money to buy and build fancy studios and other equipment we can’t justify when stewardship is considered. One station locally has rebuilt their entire station 3 times in the last 10 hears.  Each rebuild with all new equipment more pressing than the last…

Every time we buy a transmitter we don’t look for the Hummer or Cadillac of Transmitters.  Same goes for our studio equipment. ” Top Of the Line”  is great but a servant heart can’t justify it.

We have continued to add transmitters and locations as we are allowed to.  One transmitter hut has been referred to as “an outhouse” and yes it resembles one. Our home built transmitter sheds are much less expensive than prefabricated equipment shelters and don’t cost $20,000.

Our first tower site was a rental for $100 a month then the tower owner wanted $1,000 a month.  We purchased land and our own tower.  The monthly payout on the land was a fourth of the rental cost. This savings alone alllowed us to “make it” to almost 10 years of broadcasting. Yes, we had to build our own transmitter building and tower.

Most of our new sites are the tv antenna tower at a really good location. We are looking for several new sites now.  Many of our site owners end up being partners with us.  They have a church, or, a business that we can support.  They often assist us in many ways and become a part of our growing family.

In the beginning we envisioned an all volunteer staff and volunteer air staff. Many of our personalities were and are still volunteers.  We discovered that not all disc  jockeys are created equal. Not everyone can be on the air at our station.  It takes a well grounded Walk and the ability to bring people Hope in a way that looks to others rather than self.  We are fortunate that those with us share a concern for our brothers and sisters. We open our doors to you to be a part of something bigger that is making a difference in many communities.

We are now have more transmitters than any station in Indiana.  Wow.  We still have more to build in our spinning plate act.  Each day is not the bright rainbow filled first day of the rest of our lives. It is literally lived as if each day is the last. Can we do more, serve more, help more?  If we do any less what judgement do we deserve? Many are hurting and in need. We can’t just sit on the sidelines and half heartedly say “go team”.

Some days, well, MOST days we drop in bed at an hour well past most normal people’s bedtime like we have no life left. Cramming in an extra few hours fixing a problem, or, in a sleepless state creating a new one…

This said, our health issues take the toll, the kids continue to ask more and need more, the mountain high and valley low are felt regularly and we consider ourselves blessed. Our reward is ahead and we have a journey to take yet. “Can I get a witness in here?”

When this whole thing started we didn’t see the big picture as clearly as we do now.  This has all been about a “step of faith”.  Believing each day and at every point that we can meet the challenge to fight the good fight…

We only continue with YOUR help. Will you be a part of something bigger than we can dream? Support us through our donate link on the front of the web page. Or, just share lunch with us and share your interest in making this a better place.

A good friend Tom has a plate of spaghetti for me in New Castle sometimes and I have no problem saying I love this man. Gary Wright and Jack Holliday have been mentors in a very special way. Brink has built more radio stations than I ever did and he’s 11. It never hurts to tell someone you love them. Those you love get the worst and best you and sometimes never know how much they mean to you.
